Opening day

Here we go – the comics camp for young amateur comics artists started today! The camp is divided into two parts: first week is now here in summery Helsinki and the follow-up will be arranged in Tallinn in November. The camp is part of Finnish Comics Society’s Nordicomics programme.
Working at the classroom

Campers started to work right away in the cozy classroom of the comics center.

The course goes through the principles of making comics and scripting, instructed by teachers Petri Koikkalainen and Joonas Sildre. The participants will create a story of approximately 10 pages based on their own idea.
Majuri the dog

Camp’s official chef Aliisa brought her pet along and the rescue dog Majuri (pictured) will be our mascot for the week.

Today a group of participants arrived at Sarjakuvakeskus (Comics center, Hämeentie 150) and will be working on their comics from Monday to Friday. Some of the Estonian participants came straight from the harbor and the morning kicked off by people getting to know each other as well as getting to know the surroundings. The focus and theme of the day was storytelling and creating a story based on characters.
Pieces of work

Teachers Joonas Sildre and Petri Koikkalainen look over the work done during day one.

Stay tuned, samples of the artwork done during the camp will be posted in this blog!
